Whilst I'd be inclined to view Hinterland as a work of fiction in most respects, it does capture the atmosphere of the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian empire at the end of world war I and the subsequent transition of Austria into a proto-modernist state, beautifully. Hinterland is a well paced, surreal crime drama with Gothic overtones and a strong anti war message. Its superbly acted, with a cast of faces I'm familiar with from series such as Babylon Berlin.
