As far as a faithful Lovecraft-adaptation goes this is not far off the mark. It uses 'psychodelic'-looking effects of its era to hide the fact that there was no way they could visualize the scary things in this story without it looking hokey, and I think it was the best choice. Dean does such a good job acting in this movie, and the rest of the cast, including a doctor in old-man makeup so that a single flashback with the same actor is possible, as de-aging using CGI wasn't a thing back in 1970. This is not a bad movie, and as an adaptation it is really quite good.
