Tom es el único hijo (entre cuatro hijos) de padres nómadas, Mary Lee (Pfeiffer), maestra de educación especial, y Thomas Cruise Mapother III, ingeniero eléctrico. Sus padres eran de Louisville, Kentucky, y él tiene ascendencia alemana, irlandesa e inglesa.
