Charlie Chaplin

Actor, compositor, productor y director inglés, que alcanzó fama internacional con sus películas mudas, y que es considerado uno de los grandes creadores de la historia del cine. Su nombre completo era sir Charles Spencer Chaplin. Nació en Londres, en una familia de artistas de variedades, comenzó a actuar ya de niño en musicales y pantomimas. En 1910 viajó a Estados Unidos en una gira con la compañía para la que trabajaba, y se estableció allí definitivamente dos años después. Chaplin apareció por primera vez en el cine en 1913, en las películas de la Keystone, de Mack Sennett. En Carreras de autos para niños (o Carreras sofocantes, 1914) hizo por vez primera el personaje del vagabundo Charlot, con unos anchísimos pantalones, enormes zapatos, bombín y bastón de bambú, papel que interpretaría luego en más de setenta películas, incluida El vagabundo (o Charlot vagabundo, en 1915). En este año se asoció con la compañía Essanay, después con la Mutual y con la First National, hasta tener sus propios estudios en Hollywood en 1918. Durante estos años de películas cortas, desarrolló paulatinamente el personaje del vagabundo, pasando del estereotipo del payaso travieso a la figura humana y compasiva que calaría en los espectadores de todo el mundo. En 1919 fundó, junto con Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks y D.W. Griffith la United Artists Corporation, en la que seguiría hasta el año 1952. Sus películas más importantes como actor, director y productor fueron las mudas: El chico (1921), El peregrino (1924), La quimera del oro (1925), El circo (1928), Luces de la ciudad (1931), y Tiempos modernos (1936), todas ellas récords sucesivos de taquilla, pese a realizarse ya durante la época del cine sonoro. A éstas siguieron El gran dictador (1940), Monsieur Verdoux (1947), donde aparece por última vez su personaje de Charlot, Candilejas (1952), y Un rey en Nueva York (1957). Aparte dirigió, sin protagonizarlas, Una mujer de París (1923) y La condesa de Hong Kong (1966), donde hace un pequeño papel. También compuso la música de la mayoría de sus películas. Chaplin perfeccionó un estilo personal de interpretación, derivado del payaso de circo y del mimo, combinando la elegancia acrobática, la expresividad del gesto y la elocuencia facial, con un sentido del ritmo impecable. Su creación del pequeño vagabundo Charlot, un símbolo universal de la individualidad indestructible, triunfante contra la adversidad y la persecución, tanto humana como mecánica, le dio fama mundial como comediante y actor dramático. La llegada del sonoro a finales de la década de 1920 no perjudicó la efectividad de su pantomima, de la que dependía en gran parte su creación. Al mismo tiempo, comenzó a manifestar su preocupación por los problemas sociales de su época. Más tarde abandonó el papel del vagabundo para hacer personajes específicos, en una transición que marca El gran dictador, donde ya usa plenamente los recursos del sonoro. El enfoque chapliniano combina la sátira y el patetismo melodramático, bajo los que late el amor a la humanidad y a la libertad individual. Escribió dos libros Mi autobiografía (1964) y Mi vida en el cine (1975). A finales de la década de 1940 y principios de la de 1950, Chaplin sufriría la persecución de la caza de brujas maccarthysta, por su pensamiento político de izquierdas; abandonó los Estados Unidos en 1952 para establecerse en Suiza.
