John Cassavetes

Actor, director, guionista y productor de cine estadounidense que logró simultanear durante toda su carrera su trabajo como actor y director. Durante la década de 1950, Cassavetes, hijo de un inmigrante griego, intervino en más de 80 películas para televisión y cine. En 1960 dirigió su primera película, Sombras, que fue un gran éxito en Europa y le valió ser invitado a Hollywood. Las dos películas que realizó allí fueron tan comprometidas que se vio obligado a empezar a rodar cine independiente, que financiaba con el dinero conseguido en sus interpretaciones, como, por ejemplo, en Código del hampa (1964) de Don Siegel, Doce del patíbulo (1967) de Robert Aldrich y La semilla del diablo (1968) de Roman Polanski. Al margen de su actuación en estas películas valientes y comprometidas, comenzó a escribir y dirigir una serie de intensos dramas sociológicos, como Faces (1968), que trata de la desintegración de un matrimonio; Husbands (1970), en donde tres amigos casados emprenden un viaje tras la muerte de un amigo común; Así habla el amor (1971), Una mujer bajo la influencia (1974) y The killing of a chinese bookie (1976). En estas películas intervienen a menudo los mismos intérpretes, como la mujer de Cassavetes (Gena Rowlands), Peter Falk, Ben Gazzara o él mismo. La obra de Cassavetes, aunque parece improvisada, oculta una gran precisión y un minucioso análisis de las emociones. Tenía un gran respeto por el trabajo de los actores, a los que concedía una gran libertad de acción. Entre sus últimas películas como director cabe citar Opening Night (Noche de estreno, 1978), Gloria (1980), Corrientes de amor (1983) y Big Trouble (1984).
